Why JJ Redick actually wants to coach in NBA

Former NBA player JJ Redick has been linked to multiple head coaching jobs around the league. Why does Redick want to coach, though? After all, he’s found success in the sports media world since his NBA retirement.

Redick revealed the root of his desire to coach in the NBA during a recent episode of the Road Trippin’ podcast.

“What I really miss is the juice, I miss the action, I miss the competition, I miss leadership, I miss being on a team,” Redick said. “Like in a locker room, like physically in a locker room after winning a road game. Like you miss that stuff. There is a high that you get as an athlete that goes beyond passing, and shooting, and dribbling, and, well Richard (Jefferson) never took charges, taking a charge, or dunking a basketball.

“Those are all these little moments of actual game play, it’s the other moments that I feel like we all miss as ex-athletes right. The part about coaching in general, it’s a very general statement, is like the things that I miss and the things that I love doing. That involves coaching, that all is part of coaching.”

Redick spent many years playing basketball. He was a star in high school and college and ended up enjoying a respectable NBA playing career.

He played in the NBA from 2006-2021. Redick was regarded as one of the best three-point shooters during his time in the league. He shot 41.5 percent from beyond the arc for his career, and even led the league in three-point percentage with a mark of 47.5 during the 2015-16 campaign with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Redick misses the game. He spent a significant portion of his life not only playing basketball, but simply being around the sport. As he stated, Redick misses being “physically in a locker room” with his teammates.

Coaching would give him the opportunity to do that once again. Of course, he has never coached in the NBA. Perhaps Redick would consider taking a role as an assistant to begin his coaching career in the league. That would give him a chance to be in a looker room with the players and coaching staff once again.

With all of that being said, there is no pressure on Redick to find a coaching gig. He is currently working as a broadcaster, analyst, and podcaster. Redick often appears on ESPN NBA broadcasts and ESPN First Take. Additionally, he has multiple podcasts where basketball is the primary discussion.

JJ Redick loves the game. It is not difficult to envision him finding even more success moving forward regardless of which route he ultimately takes. Redick would probably be a good coach. However, fans enjoy listening to his takes and analysis as a sports media pundit as well.
